White, Pink or Brown?

No, we’re not talking your favourite bit in Neapolitan ice-cream, we’re talking different frequencies of noise, and the positive effects different ‘colours’ of sound can have on your brain.

White noise

White noise includes all audible frequencies at the same intensity. It’s like a hiss, similar to a TV tuned to static or a fan going on in the background. White noise is great for blocking out background noise if you work in a noisy environment. For some people white noise can be calming, but for others it can be a bit too intense. Which leads us to…

Pink noise

This is like white noise, but with the lower frequencies given more prominence in the mix. This creates a softer, fuzzier sound that’s easier to listen to over long periods while still providing the noise-blocking benefits of white noise. Pink noise has been compared to the sound of rain on a roof. Cozy!

Brown noise

Brown noise is a mix of all the lower frequencies. Think the crashing of waves on a beach, or distant thunder rumbling through hills. This noise is known to reduce stress and anxiety, however some people find it can be too effective and make them feel sleepy rather than alert.
But everyone’s brain is a bit different and will respond to noise in different ways, Google white, pink, or brown noise recordings to find the one that works for you. You could even try a combo!
